Speak Up Week is back!  This year it runs from Monday 30 September to Friday 4 October 2024 and the theme is 'Enabling Speaking Up'. We can’t wait to share another week of celebration and conversation as we explore how we support the growth of a healthy and sustainable speak up culture across the NHS in Scotland. We’ll discuss topics including leadership and whistleblowing culture, access to the whistleblowing process, psychological safety, understanding the experiences of all those involved in speaking up, and building trust.

Together, we want to drive change that enables more people to speak up to prevent risks of harm.

Keep checking back here, sign up to our e-bulletin or follow us on X for more updates over the weeks and months to come. You can reach us with any questions or suggestions at [email protected]

In the meantime, here are some tips and resources to support your planning:

  • Start planning early!
  • Engage senior managers from across the organisation
  • Work with your board’s contractors to engage them in the week
  • Make sure content is available to staff who don’t have access to intranet or a work computer – for example use QR codes on posters
  • Produce content that will last beyond the week itself and which can be reused to build up your resources bank
  • Include messages from those who have lived experience of the process if possible – an investigator, a confidential contact, a whistleblower if you can
  • Try to be visible in person – having stands at different sites or drop-in sessions can spark really interesting conversations
  • Free food! If you decide to have a stand, a few sweets and chocolates will always grab attention – but don’t forget the healthy options too.
